Five Brooklyn Coffee Bean Shops

If you're a fan of coffee You'll want to try out the coffee shop. These shops offer a broad variety of beans that are whole from all over the world. They also sell exclusive trinkets, kitchenware, and other items.

Some of these shops offer subscriptions to their coffee beans. Others sell large quantities of coffee beans at their retail stores.

Porto Rico Importing Co.

Veteran coffee shop that concentrates on international brews, loose teas, and a variety.

The scent of freshly roasting beans fills the air once you walk into this West Village shop. Open bags of dark-brown beans are stacked on the shelves along with sugar jars as well as coffee-making equipment and tea accessories.

The first restaurant opened in 1907, Porto Rico was founded by Italian immigrants Patsy Albanese. Greenwich Village at the time was experiencing an influx of Italian immigrants, who had opened businesses in order to meet their culinary needs. Albanese named the shop after the famous Puerto Rican Coffee she imported and sold - a drink that was so well-known in the present, that even the Pope would drink it.

Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from around the world at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online coffee beans. The company also roasts its own beans and offers wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, the current owner and president of the company, grew up above the bakery of his family located on Bleecker Street where his father was the owner of Porto Rico. The business is still run by the shop in the same way to his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

Located along Grattan Street in Morgantown, Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood, Sey Coffee is both a cafe and a roaster. Co-founders Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg, both 33, started roasting in a fourth-floor loft around the corner from their new location in 2011 under the name Lofted Coffee (with local clients including Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart service Peddler).

Sey's commitment to buying micro-lots or whole harvests from single farmers has earned him the respect of New York City coffee enthusiasts. Last year they made a 6-bag micro-lot purchase of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai 785 from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were hand-picked at the peak of ripeness, then removed by flotation to eliminate defects and then dried fermented for about 36 hours before being dried on the farm. The result is a cup with hints of melons and berries.

Sey's focus on holistically improving the quality of life for staff, customers, and growers extends beyond the walls of the shop. It utilizes biodegradable disposables as well as composts to keep waste out of garbage and converting it into substances that help reduce harmful greenhouse gases and nourish soil. It also eliminates gratuity, which places baristas in the position to help sustain their livelihoods as well as encourage them to concentrate on their profession.

La Cabra

La Cabra is a modern specialty Buy Pelican Rouge Decaf Coffee Blend - 8kg! (www.coffeee.uk) company that was founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 2012. It started with a small shop and a dedicated team. Their honest and innovative method of providing an exceptional coffee experience has earned them a devoted following not only in their own town but all over the world.

La Carba follows a strict process to find their perfect beans. They scour hundreds of varieties every year in order to find the ones that best fit their ideals. They roast them in a light style and dial them in to achieve their desired flavor profile. This gives the coffees more intense flavor and clarity.

The East Village store opened last October, with a minimalist and sleek style, and has been praised by international coffee aficionados for its exacting pour-overs and baked goods, which are overseen by head baker Jared Sexton, who's previously worked at Bien Cuit and Dominique Ansel.

The shop utilizes a La Marzocco modbar and the cups and plates are made by Wurtz ceramics in Horsens, a father and son studio. In a recent Q&A interview with Atlanta Coffee Shops, General Manager Ian Walla reveals that La Cabra serves around 250 different coffees per year, and typically has seven or eight varieties on offer at any given point.

The Plant Coffee Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant, a multi-unit retailer of coffee roasts and brews its coffee on the spot. Each cup is roasted and brewed according to your requirements in less than one second. It searches the globe for the highest-quality specialty beans that are directly sourced providing customers with the choice and quality.

Their on-site roaster utilizes fluid bed technology, which is a bit different to the drum-type machines that are commonly used in the majority of UK coffee shops. The beans are blown inside the heated box using high-speed air, which is circulated. This keeps the beans in suspension and allows for a consistent roasting speed.

I tried the Sumatran coffee and it was delicious with a smooth mouthfeel, dark chocolate aromas were present. The coffee began to cool while you sipped, subtle flavours of citrus fruit were evident.

The roasted coffee is then whisked to the Eversys super-automatic brewing equipment and the coffee is brewed according to your preferences within less than a minute. Customers can choose from nine single origins as well as different blends.

Parlor Coffee

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 behind a barbershop, with a single espresso machine. It has since grown into a bustling coffee roastery, and its beans are available in top cafes, restaurants, and home brewers throughout the city. Parlor is dedicated to procuring high-quality coffee beans from all over the world Each one is a long, arduous journey before arriving in the roasters.

The owners, who are self-described as "passionate about the craft and believe that good coffee should be available to everyone," have created a space that is down-to earth with chalkboards, compost bins, up-cycled hand-made products, and low-frills decor.

They roast their own blends (there were six at the time I was there) and single-origins. But they also hold cuppings on Sundays, which are accessible to the public. Imagine it as a brewery tasting room, where you can taste and smell the beans as they are roasted. They vary from earthy to chocolatey (one was similar to tomato!). They're off the beaten path, but is worth a visit.
