Aldara cream belongs to the group of biological response modifiers. This drug is intended for the treatment of actinic keratosis (a state when the skin gets damaged by UV radiations).
Moreover, Aldara can fight the most common type of skin cancer- superficial basal cell carcinoma, when operation wouldn’t be the right thing to do.
This drug can treat the warts that appear on the genitals (also called genital warts). Aldara is intended for the treatment of adult people and teens.
As this drug can increase your photosensitivity, you should spend less time in the sun. Don’t visit solarium. Always apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Inform your physician at once if you get burned up or notice skin blisters.
Genital warts occur in people due to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Aldara can’t kill the virus; it just allows you to get rid of the wart. Therefore, new warts can appear even during the treatment. Genital warts is a sexually transmitted infection, so you can infect any of your sexual partners.
How to use Aldara cream?
Use the drug according to the doctor’s prescriptions. Avoid decreasing or increasing the dose.
Exceeding the drug dose enhances the risk of serious severe skin responses.
Before applying Aldara cream, wash your hands, as well as the affected part of skin. Let it dry for about ten minutes before using the drug. Avoid applying Aldara on the wounded or burned skin areas. This state must be treated before applying Aldara.
Aldara cream (Imiquimod) should be used 2-5 times a week for about 4 months. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of your medication. Stick to your doctor’s prescriptions.
Adverse effects
Seek immediate medical assistance if you notice any of these signs of an allergic response to Aldara: rash; breathing problems; face/throat swelling. Remove the drug and inform your doctor immediately if you have a severe skin response, for example: burning, itching or hemorrhage during the treatment.
Stop the treatment and inform your physician immediately if you have a severe adverse effect (flu signs like high body temperature, shivering, body pain, tiredness and swollen glands). If you notice the serious or swelling urination difficulty during the treatment of genital warts in the vaginal area, withdraw the drug and contact your physician at once).
