Generic Truvada

The human immunodeficiency virus is a subgroup of retrovirus that delivers a large amount of genetic information into the DNA of the body cell.

HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a dangerous disorder that impairs the immune system, making the patients more vulnerable to various infections. HIV is divided into two types (HIV-1 and HIV-2). The first one is more dangerous and transmissible than the second one.

Current estimates indicate that more than one million of US residents are suffering from HIV, and approximately 50.000 new cases of infections are being recorded every year. It is also found that more than 20% of the new HIV cases are found in females, while in males it is about 60%.
FDA has approved the first generic of Emtricitabine (Truvada) for the treatment and prevention of HIV infections.

The generic was manufactured by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. However, the head of an HIV prevention organization suggests that more generic manufacturers will probably present their versions of Emtricitabine.

Generic Truvada is a combination of two antiretroviral medications: Tenofovir and FTC all in one medications. Truvada should be taken as a part of combination treatment for the patients with HIV. Some physicians can prescribe Truvada to HIV-negative patients to prevent HIV and minimize the risk of HIV spread.

Both drugs inside Truvada inhibit an enzyme called “reverse transcriptase”, required for the replication of HIV-infected cells. As Truvada impedes or decreases the activity of reverse transcriptase, this medication causes the affected cells to delay or prevent the production of new viruses.

Generic Truvada, when used as part of a set of HIV prevention treatment (frequent testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, sex therapy and use of contraceptives), can minimize the risk of HIV spread in some patients.
Adverse effects of Emtricitabine/Tenofovir

The use of this drug can cause lactic acidosis (a condition in which lactic acid accumulates in the bloodstream). This disease can start gradually and worsen with time.
