The main active substance of Opsumit 10 mg is macitentan, which falls within the group of “endothelin receptor antagonists”.

Opsumit is intended for the therapy of PAH (pulmonary arterial hypertension). You can use the drug alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of PAH. Pulmonary arterial hypertension suggests increased high blood pressure in the lungs arteries. In patients suffering from PAH, pulmonary arteries become narrower, which makes it difficult for the heart to pump the blood. This makes the person feel weakness, dizziness and breathing difficulty.
OPSUMIT dilutes the lung arteries, helping the heart to pump blood through them. This stabilizes the blood pressure, reduces the symptoms and prevents the progression of the disease.

How does it act?

Opsumit 10 mg belongs to the group of medications called “endothelin receptor antagonists”. Such drugs prevents various harmful effects, including vessel constriction, fibrosis, replication, overgrowth syndrome and inflammation. Macitentan impedes the link of ET-1 to ETA/ETB receptors. This substance demonstrates high affinity and sustained occupancy of the ET receptors in smooth muscle cells of lung arteries. Moreover, one of the metabolites of Opsumit is pharmacologically active at these receptors and is considered to be approximately 20% as powerful as the parent medication in the laboratory.

Opsumit 10 mg is an oral medication, manufactured by the drug company “Actelion Pharmaceuticals”. It is aimed to defeat the symptoms and prevent the exacerbation of PAH.

Opsumit is considered as a potential therapy for other lung diseases, such as Eisenmenger syndrome and thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

The most widespread adverse effects of Opsumit 10 mg include: anemia, cold, bronchitis, head pain, influenza and URTI.

Opsumit 10 mg was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2013. After that, it was authorized for sale by the European Commission.

How to use the drug?

Take the drug strictly according to the doctor’s prescriptions. The common dose is one 10 mg pill a day. Always take the pill at the same time every day to prevent skipping the dose.

Precautions

This drug can have a negative effect on the liver function. Therefore, you should inform your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms: change in the color of urine, sickness, extreme tiredness, stomachache, itchiness and jaundice. These can be the symptoms of liver problems.
