Taxotere 160mg

Taxotere 160 mg is intended for the treatment of different kinds of cancer, such as breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), prostate cancer, gastric cancer, brain cancer. The medication was approved by FDA for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer in the late 90s. In the early 2000s, Food and Drug Administration approved the medication for the therapy of prostate and breast cancer, and then head, stomach and neck.

In people suffering from breast cancer, Taxotere 160 mg is used only if the previous chemotherapy wasn’t successful. In addition, Taxotere is also used in the form of adjuvant therapy (a substance that helps another or changes the action of other drugs) for people with operable node-positive breast cancer (i.e. the breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes) along with cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin.

Mechanism of action

As well as the other chemotherapy medications, Taxotere acts by preventing cancer cells from dividing and replicating. The healthy cells don’t divide when they are around the normal cells. Nevertheless, the cancer cells get destroyed. They aren’t able to divide. In this way, cancer keeps spreading. Chemotherapy medications (such as Taxotere) attack the sick cells, so the cancer can’t replicate and spread anymore.

Together with the other chemotherapy medication called Paclitaxel, Taxotere falls within a specific group of drugs called “taxanes”. Taxanes consist of plant alkaloids. In particularly, Taxotere is contained in the bark of the Pacific Yew tree. It acts by destroying the microtubules inside the cancer cells (which are required for cell fission and replication). When the cells are unable to divide, they get destroyed.
